Rationale

My topic for this assignment was places to have alcoholic beverages in Wellington. I wanted to convey three different atmospheres/moods that different establishments provide. I feel that each of the three bars I picked has a distinct style and vibe.

For The Rogue and Vagabond, I used lighter colours to convey a relaxed outdoor vibe.  Spots of yellow imitate a light burst seen in photographs on a sunny day. For Dirty Little Secret I wanted the colour to emulate the best time to visit there; dusk on a nice day to get a beautiful view from the rooftop bar. Lastly I wanted to create an intimate, cosy vibe which the Library bar is known for - accentuating the nooks that you can sit in and have private conversations with a fancy cocktail.

From this project I learnt that I find it difficult to decide on final illustrations.  I spend most of my time on this and am never particularly happy with the result.

Week 6

Session 1 (3rd April)

Today I had a final critique with Fay. She gave me some helpful ideas with en dashes and how to make my bullet point lists look better. Fay was also helpful with deciding what paper stock to go with and the finish.
In my own time I finished the micro detailing until i was happy and then went to ink to get my brochure printed. I have started on my rationale and will add this on a new post when it is complete.

I have a physical workbook that I will hand in on Thurs

Week 5

Session 1

On Monday in week 5 we worked more on using different weights and fonts in the lecture. In our 1-1 time Fay gave me some feedback on how my copy layouts were going. Im struggling with making the copy look good, especially on the weightier pages (food and drink and intro to welly ones).

Personally I am still struggling with the Rogue and Vagabond illustration - i hate nearly every variation ive done.  But I am really happy with the other illustrations and spread layouts. I still just really hate the rogue and vagabond bean bags.

In my own time I am working on the front and back covers. I don't particularly like the one that I am working on although i like the idea i have - at the moment they just look too much like perfume bottles instead of drink bottles.

Session 2 (30th March)

Lecture was from Ink - printing press. They gave good information that is super useful for what we are doing.
Had a one on one with Matt and my completed brochure - matt agrees with my dislike of the front and back. he gave good feedback on my food and drink page and other spreads, very helpful with how to make the copy look good and play around little more with it.

In my own time over the weekend I am going to make a different cover and back cover, and look at more detailing ideas. I am also working little more on th R&V illustration. I have decided to add more the background to give it more context...

Week 4

Session 1 (20th March)

Today was the cross class critique. It was really helpful for my spreads - esp the rogue and vagabond one which I have been struggling with (the illustration). Other students went around and wrote on a feedback form about our spreads. It was also really good seeing everyone else work and the different ideas they have.
Independent study – I will go over the critiques and apply them to my work, and i want to start on my 3rd destination spread before thurs class.

Session 2 (23rd March)

Had a really interesting lecture about maps by Donald today. Starting to make me think about my map and the style that I want it to be like (i think the illustrative style is pretty much set now so will be nice to continue that through)
In my own time I have started on my 3rd destination spread - need to think about the copy that I want in the spreads!
I also want to start looking at other aspects to add to my illustration... i feel like its little boring. Fay suggested that maybe i reverse out my other illustrations like the library one

Week 3

Session 1 (13th March)

In the lecture we went over grids and composition. Was a good review of what we had touched on in first year. In class we did a crit of initial mockups of illustrations - got feedback about including colour and making it more obviously about the drinks - not so much about the books.

We then went through composition layouts on grids. We did an exercise on an A3 page and made several different compositional layout variations. In independent study I attended the clinic for indesign, this was really helpful and made indesign a lot easier to get to know. From this I started to muck around in indesign and play with layouts.

Session 2 (16th March)

In class we continued working with our indesign files. I feel like my compositions look uneven and messy. I don't know how I am going to link all my spreads. When looking at the "food and drink" copy I want to have something to make it more interesting. It seems so boring with all the text. We have our interim on monday so in my independent study i will work on the rest of the library spread, the rogue and vagabond spread and the food and drink page.

Week 2

Session 1 (6th March)

I missed this session too (Fay was emailed)

Session 2 (9th March)

Todays lecture was based around visual language - and we looked at the  broader message that visual language can deliver.

Since I missed the last two sessions I was having alittle catchup in class. We did an exercise where we looked at different designs representing either sporty, creative or scientific themes. We identified particular illustrations in design books that were in class.

I had a quick talk to Fay and showed her my initial illustration for the Library bar. Just to see if she thought I was going ok in comparison to where everyone was (considering I had missed the last two sessions). She is happy with my choices so in my own time I will go ahead and develop my illustrations further. My independent study will involve getting to have at least two illustrations

Week 1

Session 1

In our first day of VCD subject we looked at previous student examples and discussed the assignment for the next 6 weeks.

We brainstormed various activities revolving around the ideas of sport/recreation, food/drink and arts/culture. Shared with the class and talked through the idea of the matrix and how to get the overall idea and the meta ideas from it.

For independent study I continued advancing ideas from this session, my aim is to not over complicate my idea and make it super different. I want to concentrate on the illustrations that will accompany my spreads. I have started to think about how I can incorporate the style of illustration that I like.

Session 2

Unfortunately I wasn't able to attend the second session (I emailed Fay about it).
